Orzeł Unin - Sęp: a 1-4 loss to a much more effective leader

Marcin Sągol

In the Garwolin County derby, our team faced the league leaders Orzeł Unin today. After a good start to the game and a one-goal lead, we played very poorly in the second half, which the much more experienced opponents effectively took advantage of, scoring 4 goals that ultimately secured their 4-1 victory.

The beginning of the local derby didn't give any indication of what was to come, especially in the second half. The first few minutes saw much more dangerous attacks from Sęp, including three very good missed chances by Albert Stodulski (with the third one being a misunderstanding with Gałkowski). It was only on one of the subsequent offensive moves by Żelechów that Stodulski was fouled by the home team's goalkeeper within the penalty box, leading to a penalty kick awarded by referee Karol Wójcik in the 15th minute. Kuba Gałkowski stepped up to the spot and precisely struck the ball low, just to the left of the post, securing a one-goal lead for Sęp.

The rest of the first half was relatively balanced, with both sides trying to find opportunities to change the scoreline. Both Orzeł and Sęp players took several shots, but none were too threatening. A warning sign that the Uninian side would be looking to make a comeback was an action in the last moments of the first half when a long-range shot hit the left post, then crossed along the goal line and was cleared by a Żelechów defender. Fortunately, after 45 minutes, Sęp was leading 1-0.

The second half started poorly for Sęp. In the 47th minute, they failed to mark Piotr Poszytek, who scored a beautiful goal from 18 meters to level the score. As the minutes passed, many inaccuracies and defensive errors began to creep into Żelechów's game, which the more experienced opponents took advantage of mercilessly. In the 60th minute, Poszytek scored again, not having any problems to hit the ball effectively (with a scissors kick) delivered from just before the end line of the pitch. In the 73rd minute, Rafał Wielgosz dribbled past two Sęp defenders and sent the ball just inside the right post, increasing Orzeł's lead to 3-1. The result was settled in the 83rd minute when Poszytek scored his third goal of the match, capitalizing on a corner kick and sending a completely unguarded header past Seroczyński.

Sęp also had their chances in the second half, but their finishing was very poor that day. When one-on-one with the goalkeeper, Stodulski allowed a defender to take the ball away, while Łukasz Gendek also missed his one-on-one opportunity. After Paweł Mazurek's long-range shot, the ball flew over the crossbar.

The hosts didn't have a clear advantage over Sęp throughout the match, but they effectively utilized nearly every opportunity they had to score a goal, which was in stark contrast to the efficiency of our team.
